Ram Vilas Paswan was an Indian politician from Bihar and the founder of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP). He was one of the most noted Dalit leaders of the country and had been in active politics for more than five decades. In PM Modi's cabinet, he was in charge of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution portfolios.
Born in a Dalit family in Khagaria district of Bihar, Paswan was inspired and nurtured by the JP movement in the '70s. He was jailed during the 1975 Emergency. He made his way into record books for the 1977 parliamentary elections, when he won from the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat in Bihar with the highest-ever margin.
Known for his wisdom, he has been a minister in almost all Central governments formed since 1989 and served six Prime ministers. He was also part of all the national coalitions (the United Front, the National Democratic Alliance, and the United Progressive Alliance), which have formed the Indian Government from 1996 to 2015. In the UPA I government he served as the Union Minister in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Ministry of Steel. When National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed a government under Narendra Modi in 2014 then he was given charge of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, which continued in the Second Modi ministry in 2019.
Illness and Death
Admitted to a hospital he underwent heart surgery on October 4. However, his health deteriorated and he passed away on 8 October 2020. News of his death was confirmed by his son, Chirag Paswan. Condolences poured in from all quarters. Leaders from several political parties paid tribute to the departed soul.
